De School van Gaasbeek, Belgium

In 2014, the then new association ‘De School van Gaasbeek. Platform for Creation and Residence’, concluding its agreement with the Municipality of Lennik. Artists, young artists, from the dance, the theater, the music, the visual arts, the literature, have resided in the School,  135 in total till now, from all over the world. ‘De School van Gaasbeek’ works closely with MuseumCultuur Strombeek / Ghent (a collaboration between contemporary art between SMAK and the CC Strombeek Bever). The dance school of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker PARTS regularly gives her students the opportunity to work in Gaasbeek for a long time. Students from the art schools KASK (Ghent) and the Toneelschool Maastricht make use of the workspaces.

In addition, it organizes an annual SeptemberFestival, implementing new ways of working on wellbeing, social interaction and attentiveness for our surroundings. As an artist residency and platform for creation it considers walking, wandering, experimentation and exploring as one of the main tools to empower the agency and civic significance of art.  The School addresses the most contemporary issues in the field of arts, including their political and societal aspects: ecology, gender-equality, inclusion, fluidity. Its location, the former village school of Gaasbeek – a Flemish village with 300 inhabitants – and its proximity to the European Capital – only 14 kilometers – makes Gaasbeek a place to explore historical and contemporary Europe. The place, embedded in the landscape where the painter Breugel used to walk and paint, is representative of the empowering craft of walking and hospitality in European cultural artistic traditions. The School of Gaasbeek will be responsible for the opening seminar, a residency of 4 artists and a central artistic happening.
